In addition to the performing companies, there were theater owners, managers and directors who needed constant, new and attractive content to fill seats. Then, as now, content was king.

There were also performers, such as Alice Nielsen and the great vaudeville team of Weber and Fields, who recognized their need for fresh material to keep audiences coming back for more.  Star power depended upon a constant flow of good scores.
