An American in Paris–Conclusion
We are about to conclude our exploration of the music from the Conrad Salinger/MGM hit movie from 1951, An American in Paris. It is wonderful book musical that utilizes a broad range of music from George Gershwin. Click on the following link to read more and to listen to the rest of this glorious music.
We are going to start with a great production number featuring stairs that light up as Guetary ascends them. It is an imitation of a Folies Bergere production number, except our lovely ladies keep their tops on. In fact, “I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise” was taken from the 1922 edition of George White’s Scandals.
Kelly woos Caron in song and dance. First, he sings and dances to the music of “Our Love Is Here to Stay,” from the 1938 Goldwyn Follies, released the year after Gershwin’s death. We have previously featured the song, as originally song by Kenny Baker in the movie. Now, here is the song and dance from the 1951 movie, featuring Kelly and Caron.
Next, we are including “Dancing Scene 05” from the movie, featuring Kelly and Caron dancing to some of Gershwin’s orchestral music. The beauty of this sequence is breathtakingly. It is also quite suggestive, as Caron’s body slides down Kelly’s body.
We end, as the movie ends, with Kelly and Caron finding eternal happiness in each other’s arms.
