The Pajama Game–Part Three
We start this post with the first song that establishes the love between Hines and Gladys. It also establishes how jealous Hines could get. Here is Mabel and Hines in a video clip from the movie, singing “I’ll Never Be Jealous Again.”
Babe has declared that she is not in love with Sid, which is the same thing as saying that she is in love with him. Now, it is Sid’s turn. He lectures himself to be wise and not fall in love. In the show, he dictates into a machine, which then plays back the message. Here is an audio clip from the original cast album of “Hey There.”
Of course, when Doris Day was cast in the movie, it was clear that the studio needed to have Doris sing the song, especially in light of the number one hit record of the song, recorded by Rosemary Clooney. Here is a video clip of Doris singing “Hey There” from the movie.
We now shift to the company picnic, where Sid and Babe start to realize that once a year, anything can happen. Here is a video clip of John and Doris singing “Once a Year Day.”
Sid and Babe go back to her place where she tries to distract him, and he will have none of it. He is not about be distracted from kissing her. Here is a video clip of John and Doris singing “Small Talk,” one of our favorite songs from the show.
The sparring between Sid and Babe has ended, and it is now time to tell the world that they are in love. Here is a video clip from the movie, as John and Doris whoop it up “There Once Was a Man.” However, for the second time, we have to warn you that this song was not written by Adler and Ross but by Frank Loesser. No matter who wrote the song, notice that John Raitt almost goes into a full blow yodel.
In the next post we will start with Carol Haney in “Steam Heat,” one of Bob Fosse’s major landmarks in the world of dance.
