Pioneers–Second version of Elegie, Marian Anderson (vs Ponselle)

In this second post, we now feature Marian Anderson singing the same song with William Primrose on viola and Franz Rupp on piano. Once again, we hear the effortless movement from the lower notes to the soaring higher notes, uninterrupted by artificial technique. All we really sense is the life being sucked out of the young girl by the departure of her loved one.

Here are the lyrics:

O sweet springtimes of old verdant seasons
You have fled forever
I no longer see the blue sky
I no longer hear the bird’s joyful singing
And, taking my happiness with you
You have gone on your way my love!
In vain Spring returns
Yes, never to return
The bright sun has gone with you
The days of happiness have fled
How gloomy and cold is my heart
All is withered
Forever

Here is the performance.
