Jimmy McHugh–I can’t give you, Cliff Edwards

Two collaborators wrote songs for Broadway revues but never wrote a score for a Broadway show together. Jimmy McHugh wrote the music and the prolific Dorothy Fields wrote the lyrics. She also wrote lyrics for Jerome Kern and helped her brother write the book for Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun.

In 1928, Jimmy and Dorothy wrote the song “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby” for (Lew Leslie’s) Blackbirds of 1928. We have three versions of this song for you today.

The first version with a full verse introduction is from Cliff Edwards in his 1928 recording.
