Romberg–Desert Song, Romance, Kitty
The final song for today is “Romance,” sung by Kitty Carlisle in the 1944 Decca recording. Margot is asked about her concept of romance, and Romberg handed her one of his most beautiful melodies. It takes any number of turns, teasing you with wisps of one melodic line after another. The melodies have hints of other songs from the show, but “Romance’ remains its own enchanting creature, only touching the earth very occasionally.
