Gershwin–OK, Maybe

On Monday, we left Jimmy reminiscing with some of his previous playmates. Suddenly, the scene turns more serious; we hear a shot; and Kay leaps through the living room window. Jimmy remembers her as his savior from a year earlier, but Kay begs him to help her when a Revenue Officer arrives. He has been chasing a woman, but Jimmy assures the Officer that Kay could not possibly be the Officer’s suspect. Jimmy introduces Kay as his wife, and points the officer to their luggage, with the words “Just Married” on the bags.

The Officer leaves, not quite believing the story. Kay begs Jimmy to continue to help her, so that she can remain free from suspicion. He agrees; and they sing the Gershwin standard, “Maybe.”

First, I will play the Jack Cassidy version; then the Nonesuch recording.
