Youmans–Tea for two, Tony Awards show 1972

Next, we are going to feature a recording of the Tony awards in 1972. While the video quality is not great, the content is invaluable. The segment starts with the teaming of Helen Gallagher and Bobby Van (from MGM days) as they sing and dance through “You Can Dance With Any Girl at All.” At the 4 minute mark, Ruby Keeler (yes, the same Ruby Keeler who starred in the movie 42nd Street) comes on with ukulele in hand to dance to the tune, “I Want to Be Happy.” As she hands the ukulele off to a chorus member, a banjo in the pit orchestra picks up the tune to give you the feeling of a syncopated stringed instrument.
