Gershwin–Overture, Primrose McGlinn
As we continue to edge our way through 1924, we come to a George Gershwin show that never made it to Broadway. It opened in London on September 11, 1924 and ran for 255 performances. It has a perfectly wonderful score but very little in the way of US recordings. “Boy Wanted” was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald in 1959, along with “Naughty Baby” in 1992 by Michele Pawk, according to Howard Pollack, one of Gershwin’s biographers. There is an existing vocal-piano score, which served as the basis of a John McGlinn concert at the Library of Congress in 1987. And our friend, Mel Miller “launched a more fully stage revival in 2003 at New York’s 14th Street Y.
“Wait a Bit, Susie,” “Naughty Baby” and “I Make Hay While the Moon Shines” are especially good. While we don’t have the individual songs for you, we can provide the EMI/Warner Music Group recording by John McGlinn of the Overture. The music that you will hear include (in this order):
“Till I Meet Someone Like You”
“Wait a Bit, Susie”
“Isn’t It Wonderful”
“I make Hay While the Moon Shines”
“Naughty Baby”
