Import duties or tariffs have been ever with us, even in 1798. In order to avoid paying taxes to the English, Irish entrepreneurs would go to sea and meet importers off the coast. The first song of the show was a rousing men’s chorus lauding “Free Trade and a Misty Moon” as a means of commerce.
