Stout Hearted Men-The New Moon by Nelson Eddy
Fair enough. OK; you warned us; opera doesn’t sell well. True, but we have a fiduciary duty to cover the popular and not-so-popular music with equal respect. Please show a little like, if not love, for the dearly departed tenor, Luciano Pavarotti. He works so hard and is so good in the 1972 clip. Pretty please.
Onward. Next up in the male chorus series is Nelson Eddy and an MGM cast of hundreds, all marooned on an island and under attack from the French (I think). The plot lines for both the musical and the movie are so contrived that only the librettist can decipher truth from fiction; or in this case, fiction from fiction.
However, nothing can stop the glorious, rousing march from Sigmund Romberg, recorded in the 1940 movie. The lyrics hold true then and now: “Give me some men who are stout-hearted men,” and I will give you your freedom. Only now, our freedom is secured by stout-hearted men and women. Bless them all.
