Anderson, Schubert, Ave Maria, 1944

As we promised, today we are going to feature a video clip of a recording of Shubert’s “Ave Maria.” This is part of a film released in 1944 for American military personnel overseas in WWII. At the beginning, you will see Leopold Stokowski leading a choir and small orchestra. You will see a harp over to one side; around 4:30 on the clip you will see close ups of the orchestra and will see the uniforms worn by them. We think this was an all military ensemble, with the exception of Marian and Leopold. At the end, Marian will give the troops her Christmas message: “Thank you and God bless you all,” as the choir applauds her performance.

We think you will find this very moving.
