Blake, Blackbirds of 1930, Louis
Back here in the East, we are having a taste of Spring, and I am loving every minute of it. Such good weather had me thinking about friends, especially the friends that are no longer here. Nostalgia perhaps; but certainly fond memories.
And of course that got me to thinking about the great Eubie Blake, who we studied as part of our look at Shuffle Along. In 1930, Eubie Blake and Andy Razaf (lyrics) wrote a song called “Memories of You.” It was introduced by Minto Cato in Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds of 1930 on Broadway. We don’t have that performance, but we do have three performances today to share with you.
The first is from Louis Armstrong. It was recorded in 1930, around the same time it appeared on Broadway.
