Blake–Memories of you, BG 1939
Our second selection today comes from a 1939 recording by Benny Goodman and his Sextet. The personnel on this recording are different from his normal crew. Lionel Hampton stayed, but Teddy Wilson was replaced by Fletcher Henderson on the piano. Fletcher wrote some of Benny’s best arrangements and for a time led a band of his own. If you have ever seen The Benny Goodman Story, Fletcher Henderson’s character makes an entrance in the broadcast studio just before Benny makes it big on tour. Fletcher was played by Sammy Davis, Sr.
Nick Fatool replaced Gene Krupa on drums; Arthur Bernstein was added on bass. And the great Charlie Christian played an electric guitar, quite a new thing in 1939. You will hear a solo by Hampton first and around 2:20 you will hear Charlie take his turn.
