In the case of “Chimes Blues” (1923), the early recordings sound lackluster, with the beautiful melody lost in translation. Working mostly in swing bands, Jimmy Dorsey went back to Dixieland Jazz with a small group of excellent musicians in 1949 and created the best version of “Chimes Blues” ever recorded. Well, in my mind, anyway.
