Cole Porter–Babes in the Wood, cp

On October 8, 1928, a new kid on the block arrived with book musical. True, he didn’t write the entire score. He wrote about half of the music. Ray Goetz, whose wife Irene Bordoni starred in the show, wrote the rest. The key point is that Cole Porter had been paying his dues since 1919, writing songs for revues. In 1928, he was ready to write part of a score for a real Broadway show.

And what a debut it was! Two of the three songs became hits, and one of those songs became a Cole Porter standard.

Our first selection is a lesser known song which was called “Babes in the Wood” in 1928. Later, it would be renamed “Two Little Babes in the Wood.” it is a satire, with Porter’s wit center stage and very funny.

We hadn’t found any recording, but then came across this early (1934) recording by Cole Porter himself. We think you will enjoy it.
