Gershwin–OK, Do, Do, Do, Dawn
Finally, we come to the fourth version, the restoration recording by Nonesuch, featuring Dawn Upshaw and Kurt Ollman. I know we are asking you to remember a lot; however, you will note on this recording the same lively tempo used by both George Gershwin and Helen Morgan.
In a restoration recording the production personnel seek to recreate both the notes and the tempo/style used on opening night on Broadway.
However, beyond tempo, I would also like you to listen to the way the singers connect the words; it is legato and not syncopated and choppy. I believe that this is the combination that the Gershwins sought when writing the song. It is graceful and still alive and engaging.
I hope you have had fun being detectives as we looked at this great song from Oh, Kay!
