Henderson et al–Hold Everything, Button Up 1930, Jack Haley

We may have finished with Good News on Monday, but we are not finished with Ray Henderson’s music. Along with Brown and DeSylva on lyrics, Henderson wrote the music for Hold Everything, a Broadway show that opened in October 1928 and ran for a very respectable 409 performances. However, there was only one hit song that came out of the score, but it was a good one.

“Button Up Your Overcoat” was introduced by Ona Munson and Jack Whiting on Broadway but was sung by Zelma O’Neill and Jack Haley (“Tin Man”) in the 1930 movie of the same name.

As you will see in the video clip, the song was intended to be a comedy song, rather than a love song. In later incarnations, the song has been given its proper place as a love duet.
