Henderson et al–Hold Everything, Cream in Coffee, Hylton
Oh, boy, do we have egg on our collective faces; mine in particular. “Button Up Your Overcoat” did not appear in the 1928 musical Hold Everything. It appeared the following year in the 1929 music by Henderson/DeSylva/Brown called Follow Thru. Not only that but Zelma O’Neal and Jack Haley introduced the number on Broadway in 1929 and then reprised their roles in the movie of the same name in 1930.
One thing is certain; when we make a mistake, it is a whopper. The only thing we can do is get up off the floor, clean ourselves up and start all over again (apologies to Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields).
On October 10, 1928, the trio of Henderson/DeSylva/Brown opened their hit show, Hold Everything, on Broadway. The hit song of the show was “You’re the Cream in My Coffee” which was introduced by Ona Munson and Jack Whiting.
Here is Jack Hylton’s version.
