Henderson et al–Sunny Side Up, movie, Chick Endor
1929 also provided Henderson/DeSylva/Brown with an opportunity to provide more music for a Hollywood movie. The name of the movie was Sunny Side Up, starring Janet Gaynor, who would go on to play Esther Blodgett in the original version (1937) of A Star Is Born. She would be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her 1937 performance.
However, she had no singing voice, and the studio had no sense of the correct arrangement and tempo for the song; so the song was released it as a slow ballad. We are going to follow this version up with a rendition that captures all of the lively jazz fizz of a Henderson song.
Listen to this song as an object lesson on what not to do.
