Jazz origins
We are going to end today’s session with a clip from 1954. It is led by Kid Ory and features his Creole Jazz Band. Kid Ory was a legendary trombone player from New Orleans, who learned how to lay down a rhythmic line under the trumpets and cornets, according to one writer. You can hear the interplay in this recording, as all of the sidemen are given the chance to get in some solo work. You will hear some raucous trombone playing; just Kid being Kid.
Alvin Alcornis is on trumpet, George Probert on clarinet, Kid Ory on slide trombone, Barney Kessel on guitar, Don Ewell on piano, Ed Garland on bass and Minor Hall on drums.
