Act One, Scene 2 opens with a medley of college songs and then moves to a college dance setting. Billy has gone at Jane’s invitation, but Jane is nowhere to be found. Bessie momentarily forgets about stub and tries to get Billy to dance with her. Billy, performed by Michael Maguire, declines her invitation with a heavy heart; the chorus comes in at 1:50; we hear Bessie’s solo at 2:30; then Billy sees Jane at 4:20 and the song brightens because his favorite girl is there.
