Our final recording for today is a video of the BBC PROMS concert from 2012, starring Sierra Boggess as Magnolia and Julian Ovenden playing Gaylord. Julian would go on to star in a recent restoration performance for Lincoln Center.

One additional remark is in order before you listen to the music. “Make Believe” was the first in a series of lyrics that Oscar Hammerstein II would write that have been categorized as “conditional love songs.” For some reason the two lovers can’t or won’t commit to each other, and so they sing of the time when that might be possible. After Show Boat, Hammerstein wrote “People Will Say We’re in Love” for Oklahoma! and “If I Loved You” for Carousel.
