Kern–SB, Misery John McGlinn 1987/88 restoration
Our final selection today comes from the 1987/88 John McGlinn restoration recording on EMI. It is called “Misery (theme)” and was cut before opening night because the producer Florenz Ziegfeld thought it was too scary and negative.
It is also known as “Misery’s Comin’ Aroun’.” It was restored and recorded just as it was written for the show. You can hear the unrelenting sadness and grief that comes from a premonition of bad luck. Julie senses that misfortune is coming for her and demands that the people stop singing this song. Try as she might, Julie is about to be caught in her own deception.
