Kern–She’s a Good Fellow/bullfrog patrol

If it’s Tuesday, we must be covering Jerome Kern’s musical, She’s a Good Fellow. The show was produced by Charles Dillingham, a former theatre-critic-turned-producer. The book and lyrics were written by Broadway’s prolific female lyricist/librettist, Anne Caldwell. It opened on May 5, 1919 and enjoyed a fairly good run of 120 performances. Only one song stands out in this show, and it is “Bullfrog Patrol,” originally sung as a duet by the Duncan Sisters, Rosetta and Vivian.

We don’t have the Duncan sisters, but we do have Rebecca Luker and Jeanne Lehman. They both have wonderful voices, and we enjoy their ability, when solo, to turn in a star performance. What we love about this duet is the way the voices blend; and somehow, the duet reminded us of some of our opera duets. More on that in a minute; right now, let’s listen to this John McGlinn recording.
