Louis Armstrong–Beale Street Blues
We are going to finish with a recording of “Beale Street Blues,” a 1917 song that has attracted a lot of attention. “Beale Street Blues” was recorded early on by Jelly Roll Morton and His Hot Peppers in the 1923 time period, and it is a good recording. Tommy Dorsey re-recorded it in a swing arrangement in 1937, and I like it even better. However, the Dorsey recording is a dance band arrangement and is not in keeping with the original intent. So, we are going to provide a slow tempo arrangement by Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars, recorded in 1954. It has been said that W.C. Handy, who was blind by the time of this recording, liked it very much.
