Pioneers–Full Copenhagen Clip Louis, Exactly Like You, Leslie’s
Today, we are going to provide you a follow-up to the Louis Armstrong performance in Copenhagen, Denmark that we featured last Saturday. “Dinah” was part of a four song sequence that was filmed, including “I Cover the Waterfront,” “Dinah,” “Exactly Like You” and “Tiger Rag.”
The clip lasts for 9 minutes.
“I cover the Waterfront” starts things off (at end, Armstrong takes the high note on the trumpet with such purity you might mistake it for a clarinet). At 3:48, they jump into “Dinah” (starts with saxes, while trumpeter is tapping foot, Louis takes the lead, bright sound).
Then around the 6 minute mark Armstrong moves into the Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh song,” Exactly Like You,” taken from (Lew Leslie’s) International Revue (1930). There is a short musical reference to another song with a “sheik” sound at 6:26.
Watch the staccato back up arrangement of the rest of band as they dive into Tiger Rag at the end.
