Pioneers–Marian Anderson, primrose, Brahams 2 songs

I came across something from Marian Anderson that is quite sophisticated, but I think you will like it. It is called Brahms 2 Lieder for Contralto Viola and Piano, Op. 91, with William Primrose and Franz Rupp. This is not popular music; it is not even melodic music like opera arias. Nevertheless, two things stand out.

Marian Anderson had a pure voice; and by that I mean it was front, concentrated and effortless over the entire range of her singing. You scarcely sense the singer because the sound is just like a mechanical instrument, pure and true.

But the real reason that I would like you to listen to this clip is to hear how her voice blends so beautifully with the viola. In the lower notes, one senses a duet of two violas, accompanied by a piano. In the upper range of the music, one feels as though the viola has become a second contralto. This is so remarkable. I have discussed this with other musicologists, and Marian’s voice is unique.

This builds on our previous remarks about small group music. Yet, this is serious music and should be studied while we are examining Show Boat.
