Rodgers–DE, Epilogue, Opening Chorus
Today, we wind up our exploration of Dearest Enemy. It has taken a while to cover all of the music and the efforts to restore and reconstruct this musical. However, because all of the recording was uploaded to youtube, we have been able to find the clips and share them with you. That is rare; most of the time, we are lucky if we can find 3 or 4 songs.
After the Intermezzo, which we provided on Monday, there was an opening chorus, called “Welcome Home.” Although the original is gone forever, here is how Larry Moore reconstructed it: “There is nothing in the Century Library parts, although the libretto contains four lines from the now lost Rodgers & Hart number “How Can We Help But Miss You?” This Opening Chorus is a reconstruction of Augustus Barrett’s sketches for the entire number, including the dance music. After deciphering Barrett’s notes and writing, I wrote the vocal arrangement and orchestrated the whole number.”
We are introducing two new singers featured in this chorus, Christina Whyte and Aine Mulvey.
