Romberg–Student Prince, Serenade, Peerce

Finally, we come to the song that is most-associated with the musical, The Student Prince. It is simply called “Serenade” in most listings. Its full title is “Serenade (Overhead the Moon Is Beaming).” We are going to take our time with this song, providing six different recordings. We will cover the first three today; and the final three next Monday.

We are going to start with a well-known tenor from the 1940’s, Jan Peerce. He recorded “Oh, Promise Me” in 1947, a recording on Side A that we featured when we studied Reginald de Koven’s Robin Hood. We are now doing to listen to Side B, “Serenade.” We are told that although recorded in 1947, the LP was not released until July 1949.
