Sylvia Fine–Henderson et al–Good News, best and varsity 10 mins

Well, here we are on Monday, and it is time to unveil the 10 minute video clip of Sylvia Fine’s 1979 special called Musical Comedy Tonight. The full performance ran for 90 minutes; our clip includes Bobby Van as Tom and Bernadette Peters as Connie, as they sing “The Best Things in Life Are Free.” Around the 3:35 mark, Sandy Duncan and a lively group of singers and dancers perform a spirited and syncopated version of “The Varsity Drag.” We think this song and dance is just about the best version that we have ever seen of “The Varsity Drag.”

Around the 6 minute mark until the end, Ms Fine (Danny Kaye’s wife) discusses the Broadway slump during the depression and the rise of Cole Porter. Underplaying her discussion is an instrumental version of “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime.” We have featured that song before and will be playing it again soon.

In the meantime, enjoy this wonderful video clip.
