The Pajama Game–Part Two

After the last strain of the Overture ends, the curtain rises on a scene inside a pajama factory; the tour guide is the efficiency expert and he sets up two songs–“The Pajama Game” (which tells us about the subject matter of the show and the fact that the singer loves what he does for a living) and “Racing With the Clock” (which explains to the audience why efficiency on the shop flow makes the difference between success and failure).

We first present the two tunes in an audio clip from the original cast recording.

Next, we are going to provide a video clip of “Racing With the Clock.”

We now are introduced to Sid, and he tells us in song what it means to move from town to town with no place to call home. Here is a clip from the musical’s original cast recording of “A New Town Is a Blue Town.” We need to note here that this was one of two songs from the show that were not written by Adler and Ross, but by Frank Loesser.

Sid meets Babe, and the sparks start to fly. In order to defend herself and show that she is not going over to the “enemy,” she tells her co-workers that she is not in the least bit attracted to Sid. Here is Janis singing “I’m Not At All in Love” in this audio clip from the original cast recording.

Now, let’s watch Doris Day and the movie cast in a video clip of the same number.

In the next post we will start with the love affair between Hines and Gladys.
